Desktop Search with Copernic, Windows and Google

March 19th, 2008 · 5 Comments · General

Desktop Search came up on the Skype channel recently.

updated

Copernic was the main topic of conversation. It’s very polite, only indexes when there is no activity, and from what people said, it takes about a day/night to index a dev computer.

Copernic

Another one mentioned (that I could find) was the Windows Desktop Search. Not the one that comes standard, but a separate download. Begs the question why it’s not in Windows by default. I guess they have their reasons.

Windows Search

Not sure why, but Google Desktop Search wasn’t mentioned. It’s what I have running on this beast, and it does a pretty good job. The double-click of CTRL is fantastic, and I usually get a good answer from it. Actually, I usually cannot find the file, which then tells me it’s not on my computer, or it’s named something else.

 Google Desktop Search

Update:

Google Desktop Search was indeed talked about. My own internal searching algorithm is quite stupid it seems, heh.  Almost every comment was that it is limited. I respect the wisdom of my fellow Clarionites, so that makes me want to give Copernic a try. See what I’m missing out on.

Questions:

  • What Desktop Search do you use?
  • What benefits does Desktop Search provide the developer?

Also have a look at AvaFind. http://www.think-less-do-more.com/avafind/

Shift-ESC brings up a search window that lets you find results instantly. Particularly useful is the “Scout Bot” feature which shows you the name and location of recently modified or created files.

It hasn’t been updated in a while, but I’ve found it indispensible for years now.

    Leroy,

Cheers. I’ll take a look at Avafind after Easter :) .. Like the sounds of that Scout Bot. Will update the post accordingly.

    Hi Stu,

There is also another desktop search tool called X1 ( http://www.x1.com/ ). I had a go at it as well, but it seemed to be a bit agressive on cpu resources. It also gave me a more “clunky” (sp?) [you know what I mean :] feeling. I think X1 is the one that can be best compared with Copernic, both are very capable and have powerful previews. Handling mail is also a must IMO.

Overall on my machines, Copernic stands clearly out of the crowd. The only thing I miss is CONTENT indexing of APP and DCT files :-) (including app and dct extensions for indexing by filenames works fine of course)

PS: Let me also add that Copernic handles disks over LAN out of the box, and it’s soooo nice to have included most of my fileserver in the index. I had no idea of all the stuff I now find on my server :-)

    Viggo,

Cheers. I’ll be getting into Copernic shortly. For looking into files, Ultraedit is my tool of choice at the moment.
